چکیده

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of sialoceles and the risk factors associated with their formation after parotidectomy. METHODS We performed a retrospective analysis of the data from consecutive patients who underwent partial superficial parotidectomy of parotid tumors. Demographic data, preoperative imaging results, operative variables, including tumor type, incision type, tumor size, and method of parenchymal disruption were assessed. RESULTS Twenty-three of 357 patients (6.4%) undergoing partial superficial parotidectomy developed sialoceles during the postoperative period. Sialoceles occurred more often in patients who had tumors in the anterior portion of the parotid gland. Multivariate analysis showed that an anterior tumor location was a significant risk factor for sialocele formation. CONCLUSION The incidence of sialocele development was 6.4% in patients undergoing partial superficial parotidectomy. An anterior tumor location may increase the risk of sialocele formation. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Head Neck 38: E941-E944, 2016.

Factors influencing sialocele or salivary fistula formation postparotidectomy.

BACKGROUND Does the extent of parotidectomy or other patient or tumor characteristics influence the rate of sialocele/salivary fistula formation? METHODS All patients who underwent parotidectomy at the University of Wisconsin from 1994 to 2013 were considered. Patients who developed a sialocele/salivary fistula were identified. Extent of dissection, age, sex, body mass index (BMI), volume of ...

Botulinum toxin type b for the treatment of a sialocele after parotidectomy.

BACKGROUND A 41-year-old male patient developed a sialocele after partial parotidectomy for a parotid pleomorphic adenoma. The sialocele was effectively treated by a single injection with botulinum toxin type B combined with multiple needle aspirations. METHODS Ultrasound-guided infiltration of 2500 mouse-units of botulinum toxin type B in the residual parotid gland tissue under local anesthe...

Complications after surgery for benign parotid gland neoplasms: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND Prospective studies on procedure-specific incidences of complications after benign parotid surgery are lacking. Predictive factors for postoperative facial dysfunction remain controversial. METHODS We conducted a prospective study on 132 patients undergoing parotid surgery for benign parotid neoplasms. We analyzed complication rates and assessed risk factors of postoperative transi...

Predictors of facial palsy after surgery for benign parotid disease: multivariate analysis of 626 operations.

BACKGROUND The objective was to identify the risk factors for, and incidence of, facial palsy following conservative parotidectomy. METHODS Conservative parotidectomies for benign diseases (N = 626) were studied retrospectively. The risk factors for postoperative facial palsy were determined by univariate and multivariate analyses of variables related to patient demographics, comorbid illness...

The use of platelet-rich plasma gel in patients with mixed tumour undergoing superficial parotidectomy: a randomized study.

BACKGROUND/AIM Salivary gland tumors are mostly benign tumors. Whether a more conservative surgical approach at greater risk of recurrence, or a more radical intervention with an increased risk of facial paralysis is warranted is still under discussion. Our study addresses the opportunity for improving surgical outcome by employing platelet-rich plasma (PRP) gel at the surgical site. PATIENTS...
